Two reverend sisters, Vincentia Nwankwo and Grace Okoli, who were abducted in Anambra, have been freed after spending nearly six days in captivity.
The sisters, members of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, Mother of Christ, were kidnapped on Tuesday along Ufuma Road in Orumba North Local Government Area while returning from a vocational association meeting in Ogboji.
While the exact date of their release remains unclear, a statement confirming their freedom was issued on Monday by Maria Ikeotuonye, Secretary General of the Sisters of the Immaculate Heart of Mary. Ikeotuonye stated that the sisters were released unharmed and are in good health.
The statement read, “It is with joy that I inform you that our beloved Sisters Vincentia Maria Nwankwo and Grace Mariette Okoli, who were kidnapped on the evening of Tuesday, January 7, 2025, have been released unconditionally and are in good health. We thank God and appreciate everyone for their prayers and support during these challenging days. May God always be praised through Mary, our Mother.”
Anambra State Police Command spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the release of the sisters but noted that the command had not yet received a report from the victims to understand the full details of the incident.
“Yes, we’ve heard that the two nuns have been released, but we’re still waiting to get a full briefing from them. More information will be provided as it becomes available,” Ikenga said.
