An operative of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) was killed, and another critically injured when suspected internet fraudsters, also known as Yahoo Boys, opened fire on them in Anambra State.

The incident has sparked concern among anti-graft personnel, with some officials revealing that the agency’s life insurance policy has been inactive for years. “We no longer have life insurance. The last time families of fallen officers received compensation was during Farida Waziri’s tenure,” an EFCC official stated.

The operatives had traveled from their Enugu zonal headquarters to arrest a group of suspected cyber criminals when they were ambushed. The attack resulted in one officer’s immediate death, while the other was rushed to the hospital in critical condition.

A male suspect has been apprehended in connection with the murder, although his identity has not been released. Authorities have yet to confirm if the suspect has legal representation. The deceased officer, an assistant superintendent who had recently passed a promotional exam, remains unnamed.
