Former Edo State governor, Chief Lucky Igbinedion, is confident that the Super Eagles are well-equipped to defeat Rwanda when both teams face off in March for the 2026 World Cup qualifier in Kigali.
Speaking over the weekend during the opening of this year’s Kada Unity Cup at his Etete Sports Complex in Benin City, Igbinedion expressed that a World Cup without Nigeria would lack significance. He also reassured that Rwanda should not cause unnecessary anxiety for Nigerians.
“As we all know, we have a deep passion for our Super Eagles, and every right-thinking Nigerian wants to see our flag raised at the 2026 World Cup. Our talented young players, excelling in top clubs across Europe, make qualifying for the World Cup an achievable goal.
“It shouldn’t be a cause for sleepless nights. With the right approach from the NFF and the technical crew, beating Rwanda will be straightforward. I am confident our players will make us proud. A World Cup without Nigeria simply wouldn’t make sense,” he said.
Igbinedion also spoke about the importance of the Kada Unity Cup, emphasizing that its primary goal is to promote unity among military and paramilitary organizations in the state.
“Football is a unifying force, and it’s inspiring to see young, uniformed personnel working hard on the field. This competition not only keeps them fit mentally and physically but also boosts their job performance. I commend the local organizing committee for their outstanding efforts.”
Highlighting the competition’s value beyond fun, he added, “It’s not just about playing for enjoyment—there are money and other incentives at stake. This competition began last year, and as long as we’re alive, we will continue to host it. We’ll also soon extend invitations to other states.”
