
Fenerbahce have confirmed that Jose Mourinho is suing Turkish rival, Galatasaray for £40,000 in damages after being accused of making “racist statements”.
Fenerbahce boss Mourinho said the Galatasaray bench were “jumping like monkeys” and that their goalless draw on Monday was better for being refereed by Slovenian Slavko Vincic rather than Turkish officials, The Lions accused the Portuguese of racism and sought legal action against him. Soon after being banned for four games and fined £35,000, Fenerbahce say Mourinho is suing Galatasaray for just under £42,000 for “non-pecuniary losses” (not consisting of money).
Acckrding to a statement from Fenerbahce: “We would like to announce to the public that a lawsuit for non-pecuniary damages of 1 million 907 thousand Turkish Liras (£41,500) has been filed against Galatasaray Sports Club by Jose Mourinho through Fenerbahçe Sports Club lawyers due to the attack on the personal rights of our Technical Director Jose Mourinho.”
On Tuesday, Fenerbahce said Mourinho’s comments were “taken completely out of context and deliberately distorted”, and could “in no way be associated with racism”, while his former player Didier Drogba defended him. Meanwhile, Galatasaray insist the ex-Chelsea boss has “persistently issued derogatory statements directed towards the Turkish people”.
It remains to be seen what will happen to Mourinho and Galatasaray off the back of these legal matters
