A Chief Magistrates’ Court in Kaduna sentenced a 36-year-old driver, Mustapha Aminu, to 15 strokes of the cane for assaulting a police officer on duty.

Aminu, who lives in Ungwan Sanusi, Kaduna, was found guilty of striking Sergeant Adamu Maigari on the head with a log of wood. He pleaded guilty to the charge.

Magistrate Mr. Ibrahim Emmanuel, who issued the ruling, explained that the punishment was designed to make Aminu fully comprehend the seriousness of his actions and to serve as a deterrent to others.

“This will also act as a warning to anyone who might consider committing similar offenses,” Emmanuel said, ordering a court official to administer the 15 strokes.

The Magistrate also advised Aminu to avoid such behavior in the future and urged him to focus on his work to become a responsible member of society.

Earlier, the prosecutor, Inspector Chidi Leo, explained that on January 29, around 2 p.m., Aminu had assaulted the officer while he was performing his duties.

Leo stated that Aminu had been driving recklessly, and when the officer attempted to stop him, the driver hit him with a log of wood. The offense violated Section 237 of the Kaduna State Penal Code, 2017.
