The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) has dismissed accusations that it sells substandard petrol with a high burn rate. In a statement released on Saturday by its spokesperson, Olufemi Soneye, NNPCL responded to a viral video alleging that its petrol burns quickly in fuel tanks.
The video, which had gained significant attention online, featured a content creator who claimed he bought a litre of Dangote petrol from an MRS filling station in Alapere, Lagos, at N925, and the same litre from an NNPC station in Ojodu Berger for N945. The individual further claimed that when used in separate generators, the NNPC fuel stopped running after 17 minutes, while the Dangote petrol lasted 33 minutes.
In response, NNPCL clarified that the petrol sold at its stations is sourced from the Dangote refinery. The statement read: “NNPC Ltd strongly refutes the false and misleading allegations in the viral video. This claim is completely unfounded and stems from unverified, amateur research without credibility or professional oversight.”
The company assured that its fuel is carefully formulated to ensure optimal efficiency, durability, and environmental sustainability for consumers. It also highlighted that a significant portion of the Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) sold at its stations in Lagos comes from Dangote Refinery, a key partner in enhancing local production and energy security.
“Dangote Refinery adheres to strict industry standards, ensuring the quality of petroleum products supplied to our customers,” the statement emphasized.
NNPCL also criticized the video as part of a broader attempt by economic saboteurs to spread misinformation and damage its reputation. The company made it clear that it will not tolerate deliberate misinformation, announcing plans to pursue legal action against individuals or groups who intentionally spread falsehoods.
The statement concluded by urging the public to ignore such fabricated content and rely on credible sources for accurate information, reaffirming NNPCL’s commitment to ensuring fuel availability, affordability, and quality for all Nigerians while upholding global industry standards.
