The Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria has reiterated its dedication to upholding discipline and order in legislative proceedings following an alleged breach of protocol by Senator Natasha Akpoti.

In a statement issued by former Senator Tijani Ahmed, who served Kogi Central from 1999 to 2003, he emphasized the Senate’s firm stance on the importance of discipline and adherence to the rules that govern legislative conduct.

Senator Ahmed highlighted that every Senator is expected to act in accordance with the dignity of their office, including strict compliance with rules such as speaking only from their designated seats. He expressed concern that Senator Akpoti reportedly violated this rule by speaking from an unauthorized location, despite the intervention of the Senate Whip and the Senate President.

“Her actions not only disrupted proceedings but also undermined the integrity of the Senate as an institution,” the statement read.

The Senate reaffirmed that the title of “Distinguished Senator” carries with it a duty to uphold the highest standards of conduct and leadership. It cautioned that failure to abide by Senate rules erodes public trust and diminishes the prestige of the office.

The statement also suggested that disciplinary action may be taken to reinforce the importance of maintaining order in the legislative chamber.

“No one is above the rules that govern our legislative processes,” it emphasized.

While underscoring the Senate’s constitutional responsibility to legislate for the peace, order, and good governance of the nation, the statement assured that any form of disorderly behavior would not be tolerated.
