The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has called on President Bola Tinubu to intervene in the ongoing dispute between Senate President Godswill Akpabio and Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, representing Kogi Central.

In a statement issued on Saturday by NANS National Vice President, Sileola Akinbodunse, in Abeokuta, Ogun State, the association expressed concern about the potential escalation of the conflict.

Akinbodunse emphasized the need for the President to step in and resolve the issue before it causes further tension and possibly damages Nigeria’s international reputation.

The student body also urged both lawmakers to find a peaceful resolution. Akinbodunse noted, “The National Assembly is an important institution in the government, and it must be led by representatives who act with integrity.” She further stated that the disagreement between Akpoti-Uduaghan and Akpabio should not be allowed to persist and worsen.

Akinbodunse highlighted that unresolved allegations, such as the claims of sexual harassment made by Akpoti-Uduaghan against Akpabio, could lead to international embarrassment for Nigeria.

Although the Kogi Senator has not provided concrete evidence for her claims, Akinbodunse suggested that the matter should be thoroughly examined to determine the truth.

She warned that if the situation isn’t resolved, NANS would consider taking action by marching to the National Assembly to demand a resolution.

Akpoti-Uduaghan, during an appearance on Arise TV on Friday, accused Akpabio of making sexual advances towards her on two separate occasions. She further alleged that the seating arrangements in the Senate were designed to hinder her legislative activities.

Akpoti-Uduaghan likened the situation to a student failing an exam because she refused to comply with inappropriate demands from a lecturer.

In response, Akpabio, through his media consultant Kenny Okulogbo, dismissed the accusations, calling them “baseless” and “fictitious.”

This ongoing dispute has raised serious concerns, and NANS has urged all involved parties to prioritize peace and the country’s reputation.
