Twelve inmates escaped during a jailbreak in Kogi State early on Monday. The Kogi State Government confirmed the incident in a statement issued by Kingsley Femi Fanwo, the Commissioner for Information and Communication.

Fanwo commended the rapid response of security agencies to the situation, which occurred at the Federal Correctional Center in Kotonkarfe. He called the escape “unfortunate” but assured citizens that the state government is taking decisive measures to prevent a repeat occurrence.

The government has vowed to collaborate with security agencies to investigate the circumstances surrounding the escape. “The theory that the inmates escaped via the tower without damaging the structure raises serious concerns,” Fanwo said. “This warrants a full investigation to determine how the escape occurred, capture the fugitives, and identify any internal complicity.”

Fanwo also stated that Governor Ahmed Ododo has directed the State Security Adviser to work with the Federal Correctional Center and other security agencies to enhance security and prevent future breaches.

Additionally, the state government pledged to continue supporting federal security agencies with logistics and resources to strengthen their operations.

While investigations continue, the government reassured the public that the situation is under control and encouraged residents to go about their daily activities as usual, emphasizing that the security of life and property is the top priority.
