The Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) has officially recognized the reinstated council chairmen of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Osun State following a recent Court of Appeal judgment delivered on February 10, 2025.

ALGON National Secretariat shunned the Ademola Adeleke-backed chairmen elected on the platform of the People’s Democratic Party led by Sarafadeen Awotunde.

Awotunde and his colleagues recently attended the conference organized by ALGON in Lagos.

But in a letter by the ALGON acting Director General, Hon. Barr. Evan Enekwe, the leadership of ALGON expressed deep concern over the ongoing political unrest and the destructive impact it has had on lives and properties in the region. The organization extended its condolences to the family and associates of Hon. Abbas, emphasizing the need for peace in the local government sector.

ALGON reaffirmed its commitment to the rule of law, stating that it will uphold the recent court ruling that reinstated the affected council chairmen.

“We recognize you as the legitimate leaders of the local councils in Osun State and urge you to exercise caution and maturity in these challenging times,” the letter stated.

In an effort to stabilize the situation, ALGON promises to engage with the leadership of the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) to encourage local government staff to resume their duties.

The association emphasized the importance of maintaining operational continuity in local governance for the benefit of the communities they serve.

“The leadership of ALGON is always available to provide support to its members and will work tirelessly to ensure a conducive environment for local government operations in Osun State,” the letter concluded, reinforcing ALGON’s dedication to fostering collaboration among local government stakeholders.
