Protesters supporting Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, the lawmaker representing Kogi Central Senatorial District, were dispersed by the Nigeria Police Force with tear gas at the entrance of the National Assembly in Abuja on Wednesday.
The supporters had gathered at the assembly’s gate early in the morning, demanding that Senate President Godswill Akpabio resign amid allegations of sexual harassment. The protesters were dispersed to prevent any disturbances as the Senate resumed its plenary session and the Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Public Petitions convened.
The protesters have since relocated to the Unity Fountain to continue their demonstration.
Earlier in February, Akpoti-Uduaghan and Akpabio clashed over seating arrangements in the Senate, leading to her referral to the Senate’s ethics committee. Last week, Akpoti-Uduaghan accused Akpabio of sexual harassment, claiming he had made sexual advances towards her, which she rejected.
