The Lagos State Police Command has charged Abiola Odutayo, the driver involved in the deadly crash that claimed the life of Bumpa co-founder Adetunji Opayele, with reckless driving.

In a charge sheet (LA/301/2025) presented before Magistrate M.E. Owumi at the Tinubu Magistrate Court, the prosecution alleged that Odutayo violated Sections 50(1) and 52 of the Lagos State Road Traffic Law, 2018.

The charge sheet states that, “On March 4, 2025, at about 10:20 PM, at the entrance gate traffic light junction, 1004 Housing Estate, Ozumba Mbadiwe Road, Victoria Island, Lagos, you drove a Ford Edge Jeep (Registration No. LND 418 JR) in a reckless and inconsiderate manner, showing no regard for other road users, thus committing an offense under Section 50(1) of the Lagos State Road Traffic Law, 2018. While in control of the vehicle, you acted carelessly, leading to the death of Adetunji Opayele, aged 32, thus violating Section 52 of the Road Traffic Law of Lagos State, 2018.”

After pleading not guilty to the charges on March 12, Odutayo was granted bail in the sum of N1 million, with two sureties. The case was adjourned to April 16, 2025.

The tragic incident has sparked outrage across Nigeria, with over 63,000 people signing a Change.org petition demanding justice for the deceased.

CCTV footage from the night of the crash, at 10:19 PM, shows Odutayo’s car entering a junction, with Opayele’s motorbike colliding with the vehicle’s driver-side in the middle of the road.
