A National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member in Lagos, Ushie Uguamaye, has raised alarm after reportedly receiving threats following the viral spread of her video criticizing the government of President Bola Tinubu.

In the TikTok video posted on Saturday, Uguamaye expressed frustration over the country’s worsening economic conditions, particularly inflation and hardship, which she claimed have made hard work seem futile.

She directly criticized President Tinubu, describing him as a “terrible leader” and questioned the government’s actions to alleviate the suffering of Nigerians. Uguamaye also complained about the poor living conditions in Lagos State, calling it a “smelling state.”

After the video gained traction, Uguamaye alleged that she started receiving threats, some of which came from NYSC officials who urged her to remove the video. In response, she took to Instagram, expressing her frustration over what she described as attempts to silence her.

In an Instagram post, she shared, “Dear Nigerians, I am already being threatened by the NYSC board to stop speaking on this issue. Less than 24 hours, I’m already being threatened by the government starting with the NYSC board!”

She continued by revealing that the NYSC had her personal information and warned that if anything happened to her, Nigerians should know who to hold accountable.

Uguamaye emphasized that she did not break any laws by criticizing the government and insisted that her right to free speech as an NYSC corper should not be violated.

She further pointed out, “I didn’t do anything wrong; I just asked that they work on inflation. Why can’t I speak up? Being an NYSC corper doesn’t mean I signed up my right to complain.”

The situation has sparked a significant online debate, with many questioning whether the NYSC is attempting to suppress free speech among corps members.
