The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has destroyed counterfeit pharmaceuticals and other illegal products valued at approximately N100 billion at a dump site in Moniya, Ibadan, Oyo State, on Saturday.

The destruction was carried out by NAFDAC’s Director-General, Mojisola Adeyeye, represented by the agency’s Director of Narcotics, Yedunni Adenuga, at the Akinyele Local Government Area.

The destroyed products included banned and controlled substances, such as Tramadol 225mg and Analgin, among others. Adeyeye emphasized NAFDAC’s ongoing efforts to ensure the safety and quality of food, drugs, cosmetics, medical devices, packaged water, and beverages.

She explained that the illicit, expired, and banned products were seized during recent raids across various markets in the country, including the Idumota, Onitsha, Ariara, and Ezeuku open drug markets. These findings highlight the growing security concerns in the country linked to counterfeit drugs and unregistered products.

Adeyeye also acknowledged the crucial support of the National Security Advisor, Nuhu Ribadu, who facilitated the deployment of over 1,000 security personnel, including military, police, and Department of State Services agents, for the operation. The estimated street value of the destroyed goods is approximately N100 billion.

NAFDAC also apprehended several suspects during the three-week operation, and investigations are ongoing. Those found guilty will face appropriate legal consequences.

Shaba Mohammed, Director of Investigation and Enforcement, reiterated that selling drugs in open markets is a criminal offense, emphasizing that selling or hawking drugs in kiosks, vehicles, or open markets is punishable by law.
