The Advocacy for Integrity and Rule of Law (AIRL) has issued a warning to the Nigerian Senate, stating that it risks losing public trust and undermining the nation’s democracy if it mishandles the suspension of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan.
The group highlighted that the ongoing dispute between Senate President Godswill Akpabio and Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan could severely damage the reputation and credibility of the Senate.
In a statement, AIRL Chairman Mohammed Ibrahim Gamawa urged the Senate to act with restraint and ensure that Akpoti-Uduaghan’s constituents are not deprived of their right to representation.
AIRL described the recent tensions in the Senate, which have spilled over onto social media, as a “show of shame” that could tarnish the integrity of the legislative institution.
The organization further cautioned that mishandling Akpoti-Uduaghan’s suspension could escalate into a crisis, undermining Nigeria’s fragile democracy.
Gamawa reminded the 10th Senate of its duty to represent the people, warning that failing to resolve the situation could have long-lasting consequences for both the Senate’s legacy and the stability of Nigeria’s democracy.
“The confrontation between Senate President Akpabio and Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan, both in the Senate and on social media, risks bringing the Senate into disrepute,” Gamawa said.
“The events currently unfolding are drawing international attention, and this could be seen as a disgraceful display by one of the three branches of government.”
He added, “We urge the Senate to prioritize national unity and focus on its primary responsibility of lawmaking, rather than furthering internal conflicts. Nigerians will not forgive the 10th Senate if this issue is not properly handled, as it could threaten the democratic progress we’ve worked so hard to achieve.”
AIRL also urged senators to reflect on their roles as elected representatives of the people, reminding them that they are not ordinary citizens but trusted public officials.
