The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has warned the Federal Government against any plans to raise electricity tariffs, threatening to lead mass protests against such an increase.

The NLC also expressed its intention to take action against telecommunications companies that fail to implement the 35% tariff hike negotiated with the government, as opposed to the 50% increase earlier approved by the Nigeria Communications Commission (NCC).

In a statement issued at the end of its National Executive Council (NEC) meeting in Yola, Adamawa State, the NLC expressed its strong disapproval of the ongoing reclassification of electricity consumers by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC).

The union accused the NERC of attempting to unjustly migrate consumers to higher tariff bands under the guise of improved service, which it described as an unfair burden on the public.
