The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) has signed a 20-year Gas Sale and Purchase Agreement with Ssonic Petroleum Limited to boost domestic gas utilization.
The deal, finalized on March 6, 2025, will see NNPCL’s subsidiary, NNPC Gas Marketing Ltd, and its partner, NIPCO Gas Ltd, supply 80 million standard cubic feet of natural gas daily to Ssonic Petroleum’s proposed LNG plant in the Lekki Free Trade Zone, Lagos.
In a statement released on Friday, NNPCL spokesperson Olufemi Soneye emphasized that the gas supply agreement is part of NNPCL’s broader strategy to enhance domestic gas use, thereby contributing to Nigeria’s industrial and economic growth.
The agreement, effective for 20 years, aims to position gas as a cleaner, cheaper, and more environmentally friendly fuel, aligning with global goals of reducing climate change.
NNPCL Group CEO Mele Kyari underscored the critical role of natural gas in driving Nigeria’s industrial development and economic expansion. He also highlighted the importance of prioritizing natural gas production and distribution in light of global geopolitical dynamics and energy security concerns.
Last year, NNPCL entered into a similar agreement with the Dangote Petroleum Refinery, agreeing to supply 100 million standard cubic feet of natural gas daily over an initial 10-year term, with an option for renewal.
