The Sole Administrator of Rivers State, Vice-Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (retd.), has confirmed that the withheld local government allocations in the state have now been released.

This announcement was made during a meeting with the Heads of Local Government Administrators on Friday in Port Harcourt.

Ibas, the former Chief of Naval Staff, assured workers that the necessary actions would be taken to promptly settle salary arrears. He expressed empathy for the workers, acknowledging the challenges they faced due to delayed payments.

“I understand the pain of the workers,” he remarked, emphasizing that the released funds would be used to clear the salary backlog. He further stated that financial accountability would be strictly enforced in all local government areas, with a requirement for wage bills to be submitted along with supporting documentation to the Head of Service.

Ibas also warned against financial mismanagement, vowing to closely monitor public funds and take action against any recklessness.

In his address, Ibas reiterated his administration’s commitment to good governance, stating it was more than a slogan but a promise to foster positive change in the coming months.

He urged local government administrators to take the lead in ensuring security within their jurisdictions.

In response, Clifford Paul, President of the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees and Administrator of Port Harcourt LGA, praised the state’s developmental progress despite political challenges.

He commended the Federal Government for appointing Ibas, citing his competence and leadership skills.

Paul assured the administrator of his union’s support for peace and stability while urging the prioritization of workers’ welfare. He also mentioned that local government workers, who are currently owed two months’ salaries, are hopeful with the release of the withheld allocations.
