President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State and the suspension of Governor Siminalayi Fubara has ignited a range of reactions across the nation.
The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), legal experts, stakeholders, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar, Femi Fani-Kayode, Ijaw Youths, and several others have expressed their opinions, with many criticizing Tinubu’s decision.
However, some, like Hon. Obidike Chukwuebuka, a prominent member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), have praised the President for what they consider a prudent intervention in the state’s political turmoil.
In a statement issued to Vanguard on Wednesday, Obidike stated that Governor Fubara owes President Tinubu a debt of gratitude for intervening and preventing his potential impeachment.
Obidike’s comments come amid growing speculation that Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State effectively shielded Fubara from imminent removal from office.
Referring to Section 305 of the 1999 Constitution, Obidike highlighted that the President has the constitutional power to declare a state of emergency, temporarily suspending the authority of the Governor, Deputy Governor, and other state government bodies. This provision, he argued, gives the President the necessary control in times of crisis.
Though details of the alleged impeachment plot remain unclear, Tinubu’s intervention has had a substantial impact on the political dynamics in Rivers State. His efforts to ensure peace and stability were evident during a recent meeting with Governor Fubara and key stakeholders, where he emphasized the importance of unity and collaboration.
“As the situation continues to evolve, Governor Fubara’s political future is closely tied to President Tinubu’s influence, with potential long-term consequences for the state,” Obidike concluded.
