Tension is rising in Benue State, Nigeria, after the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN) alleged that 20 cows were poisoned and 200 rustled by criminal elements in Agatu Local Government Area.
According to Risku Muhammed, Chairman of MACBAN in Benue State, the poisoning occurred on Saturday at Ucha village, where a farmer allegedly laced rice chaff with poison, killing 13 cows instantly and leaving seven others under veterinary care.
The incident has sparked concerns about the safety of herders and their livestock in the area.
Muhammed commended the Local Government Council Chairman, Melvin Ejeh, for his prompt response to the issue and for providing compensation for cows killed by criminals in the past.
Ejeh acknowledged receipt of the complaint and assured that an investigation is underway.
He noted that Agatu has enjoyed relative peace recently, thanks to the efforts of the state government and security operatives.
The Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Catherine Anene, confirmed the incident and stated that a suspect has been arrested in connection with the poisoned cows.
Anene also highlighted the presence of a Peace Committee working to maintain sustainable peace in the area.
