The Ondo State Police Command has arrested three individuals in connection with the assault on members of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) in Ogbese, Ondo State.
According to reports, the attack occurred on Sunday, February 23, when NANS members were en route to Abuja for their annual convention. The incident took place in the Ogbese area of Akure North Local Government Area.
CSP Funmilayo Odunlami, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) for Ondo State, confirmed the arrest in a statement issued in Akure on Tuesday. She stated that the police received an urgent call from one of the NANS members who reported the unprovoked assault by a group of youths.
Responding swiftly, the police arrived at the scene, restored order, and ensured the safety of the victims. A manhunt was launched to apprehend the perpetrators.
Odunlami further revealed that this was not the first time NANS members had been targeted in the community. Intelligence gathered led to the successful arrest of three suspects connected to the attack.
The Commissioner of Police (CP), Wilfred Afolabi, assured NANS members that a thorough investigation would be conducted to uncover the full details behind the attack and ensure that all responsible individuals are brought to justice. The CP reiterated the police’s commitment to the safety of both residents and travelers in the state.
The three arrested suspects are currently undergoing interrogation and will face charges upon the completion of the investigation.
The PPRO urged the public to remain law-abiding and report any suspicious activity to the nearest security agency.
In response to the police’s swift action, Comrade Owolewa Taiwo, the Zonal Coordinator for South-West NANS, expressed gratitude to the CP for the prompt intervention and for the police’s ongoing efforts to maintain security across Ondo State. Taiwo also pledged NANS’ support in combating crime and criminal activities in the state.
