Dr. Jibril Mustapha, President of the Nigeria Rescue Mission Organisation and former leader of the Buhari Youth Organisation (BYO), has called on former President Goodluck Jonathan to run for the presidency in the 2027 election.

In a statement issued on Sunday in Lagos, Mustapha urged Jonathan to heed the increasing demand for his return to politics and to once again contest for the highest office in the land.

“As the country prepares for the 2027 elections, the Nigeria Rescue Mission Organisation believes it is essential for all stakeholders to come together and support a candidate who can represent the interests of all Nigerians,” Mustapha said.

“We strongly encourage former President Goodluck Jonathan to step forward as a unifying candidate who can lead the nation toward a brighter future,” he added.

Mustapha pointed to the current challenges facing Nigeria, such as economic hardship, insecurity, unemployment, and rising banditry, emphasizing the need for a leader with integrity, inclusivity, and a vision for national unity.

“Nigeria stands at a critical juncture, grappling with issues that jeopardize our stability and progress. We need a leader who can bring all Nigerians together, irrespective of their background,” Mustapha stated.

He commended Jonathan’s past leadership, highlighting his commitment to democratic values and governance centered on the well-being of citizens.

“Jonathan’s leadership style encouraged inclusivity and economic growth—qualities that are vital for Nigeria at this crucial moment,” Mustapha remarked.

He further noted that under Jonathan’s leadership, the country could regain its international standing and restore internal stability.

The Nigeria Rescue Mission Organisation believes Jonathan has the experience and vision needed to guide Nigeria into a prosperous future.

Mustapha also recalled that the BYO, a youth organization that had supported former President Muhammadu Buhari, had backed Jonathan in the 2015 election, in which Jonathan lost his bid for re-election to Buhari.

In response to ongoing discussions about Jonathan’s eligibility, a 2022 ruling by a Federal High Court in Bayelsa confirmed that Jonathan is eligible to run in future elections.

The ruling, delivered by Justice Dashen, clarified that the 2007 election, which saw the late Umaru Yar’Adua’s election, did not bar Jonathan from contesting again, according to Section 137 of the Nigerian Constitution.
