Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, has condemned the overnight fire that ravaged Ilesa High Court 2 on Monday, April 21, 2025, calling it a direct attack on the judiciary and a threat to democratic stability.

The fire, which broke out under the cover of darkness, caused extensive damage to the court building, destroying sensitive legal documents and exhibits related to high-profile cases. By the time firefighters arrived, most of the structure had already been consumed by flames.

According to officials, the Osun State Fire Service was alerted promptly but was unable to prevent significant damage. Early assessments suggest the incident may have been premeditated, with some case files potentially targeted deliberately.

In a statement issued by his spokesperson, Mallam Olawale Rasheed, Governor Adeleke described the arson as “an unjustifiable attack on the state judiciary by unknown individuals.”

The governor has ordered a comprehensive investigation to uncover those responsible for the blaze. He also directed security agencies to increase surveillance around all judicial facilities in the state to prevent similar incidents.

“A thorough investigation must be carried out to identify and prosecute the perpetrators,” Governor Adeleke said. “Security at all court buildings must be immediately reinforced.”

He also instructed the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice to work with the Ministry of Works and Infrastructure to begin urgent repairs and rehabilitation of the destroyed court.

Describing the act as a dangerous provocation, Adeleke stressed that any attack on the judiciary is an attack on democracy.

“The judiciary is a stabilizing force and a cornerstone of our democratic system,” he stated.

The Governor appealed to the public for vigilance and cooperation, urging citizens to help safeguard justice institutions rather than undermine them through violence.
