Senate President, Senator Godswill Akpabio, has called for a deeper collaboration between Nigeria and China, commending China’s remarkable transformation as an exemplary model of visionary leadership and strategic growth.

Akpabio made this appeal in Abuja during a meeting with a delegation from the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), led by its Vice Chairman, Hu Chunhua.

The former governor of Akwa Ibom State lauded the development of Nigeria-China relations over the last 50 years, highlighting how the partnership has evolved from cautious beginnings into a dynamic, strategic alliance.

“We’ve moved past mere formalities to establish a strong, lasting bond,” Akpabio remarked. “China’s rise from poverty to global prominence is a testament to the power of foresight and dedication.”

He pointed to China’s significant contributions to Nigeria’s infrastructure, noting key developments in transportation, technology, and industry.

“From roads and railways to ports that open new economic avenues, China’s impact is undeniable. These are more than just physical structures—they represent a deep trust and cooperation between our nations,” he added.

Akpabio also referenced President Bola Tinubu’s recent trip to Beijing, which led to the establishment of a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between Nigeria and China.

Quoting a Chinese proverb, “If you want to go fast, go alone; if you want to go far, go together,” he emphasized the importance of collective progress for both countries.

The Senate President reiterated Nigeria’s commitment to modernization, peacebuilding, and shared prosperity alongside China.

He further acknowledged the CPPCC’s role in fostering political consensus in China and called for enhanced collaboration between the Nigerian National Assembly and the CPPCC, through parliamentary exchanges and institutional partnerships.

Akpabio also underscored the significance of initiatives like the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation and the Belt and Road Initiative, particularly in the areas of infrastructure, education, healthcare, trade, and digital technology. However, he stressed the importance of diplomatic dialogue to address challenges such as trade imbalances and visa reciprocity.

In response, CPPCC Vice Chairman Hu Chunhua emphasized Nigeria’s strategic importance both in Africa and globally. He expressed China’s desire to deepen cooperation, especially in agriculture and scientific innovation, with a focus on rural development.

Chunhua also announced plans for a youth conference in China, inviting Nigerian youth to participate as part of efforts to strengthen cultural exchange between the two countries.
