An autopsy has confirmed that two-year-old Raphaella Ogbodo died from asphyxia and drowning after her body was found in the swimming pool of Smiley Kids Montessori School in Sangotedo, Lagos.
Raphaella’s mother, identified simply as Ella, had earlier called for justice, stating that her daughter left home for school on January 15 but tragically never returned.
Initial speculation suggested the child may have been electrocuted before being placed in the pool to simulate a drowning.
However, a medical report obtained by PUNCH Metro on Thursday has ruled out the electrocution theory. Signed by the Chief Pathologist at Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), the autopsy confirmed that the cause of death was asphyxia due to drowning.
“An autopsy conducted during a discreet investigation determined the cause of death to be asphyxia and drowning,” the report stated. It added that findings from a recognized government agency contradicted earlier claims of electrocution.
The case file has been forwarded to the Directorate of Public Prosecutions for further legal action.
In response to the incident, the Lagos State Government shut down the school to allow for a thorough investigation. School officials have pledged their full cooperation with law enforcement and regulatory bodies.
Three staff members Nursery Department Head Tonia Igbafe, class teacher Helen Ebodaghe, and nanny Habibat Mohammed have been arrested and are facing charges of conspiracy, negligence, and suspected murder. They are currently being held at the Kirikiri Female Custodial Centre.
