The Lagos State High Court in Ikeja has ruled that the removal of Mudashiru Obasa as Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly was unconstitutional and therefore invalid.
In a judgment delivered on Wednesday, Justice Yetunde Pinheiro voided the Assembly’s January session and the resolutions passed during it, which led to Obasa’s removal.
Obasa had filed a legal challenge against the Assembly and Mojisola Meranda, who was announced as his replacement. He argued that his removal was orchestrated by 36 lawmakers while the House was on recess and he was abroad.
Represented by Chief Afolabi Fashanu, Obasa contended that the sitting was unauthorized, lacking his consent or any formal delegation of authority, thereby breaching the House’s Standing Orders.
His suit cited nine procedural and constitutional violations, referencing key provisions of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) and internal legislative rules.
