The Kogi State Police have called on Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan to cancel her planned Sallah rally in the Central Senatorial district.
This request was made in a statement on Tuesday from the State Commissioner of Police, Miller Dantawaye, and signed by Police Public Relations Officer, ASP William Aya.
The statement highlighted that the rally contravened the ban on political gatherings imposed by the state government on Monday.
The Kogi police chief expressed concerns that the rally posed a threat to public order, citing the state’s recent prohibition of all political events due to security risks in the area.
The statement reads, “In response to intelligence reports of security threats in Kogi State and the subsequent ban on all rallies and processions by the state government, the Kogi State Police Command urges the organisers of the Okene rally to cancel the event in the interest of maintaining peace.”
It continued, “The cancellation is crucial due to intelligence suggesting that some individuals plan to hijack the rally and disrupt peace. The Command cannot risk jeopardizing the current stability in the state. Consequently, in light of these security concerns, we strongly advise that the event be called off to avoid any law and order issues. The Kogi State Police Command will take firm action against anyone who disrupts the peace.”
Despite the ban, Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan remains determined to proceed with her “homecoming,” emphasizing her intent to visit the state for Eid al-Fitr celebrations with her constituents.
