Former Deputy Senate President, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege, has officially addressed the defection of Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), ending weeks of speculation and silence.
Omo-Agege, who was defeated by Oborevwori in the 2023 governorship election, directed all organs of the Delta APC to welcome the new members, including Oborevwori and his predecessor, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa, following the governor’s dramatic shift to the ruling party.
In a statement released on Sunday, Omo-Agege reassured APC members that the party’s national leadership was already overseeing the political realignment to protect the party’s interests in Delta State.
Before Oborevwori’s defection last week, Omo-Agege had been one of the most vocal opponents of any potential alliance with the governor. However, with Oborevwori’s move, he has not only bolstered his own political future ahead of the 2027 election but has also effectively claimed the leadership of the Delta APC, a position Omo-Agege once held firmly.
Political analysts suggest that this shift may leave Omo-Agege politically sidelined, as the 2027 governorship candidacy may now be beyond his reach. Despite this, Omo-Agege called for unity within the Delta APC in his statement.
“The leadership of the Delta State chapter of the All Progressives Congress warmly welcomes His Excellency, Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, and all leaders and members of the Peoples Democratic Party into the All Progressives Congress,” Omo-Agege said. “This historic move is a testament to the success of President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda and its impact on growth and development in our country.”
He continued, “In consultation with the national leadership of our party, the Progressive Governors Forum, and Delta APC stakeholders, I want to assure everyone that any concerns arising from this development are being addressed with prudence and foresight, in the best interests of the party and the state.”
Omo-Agege urged APC members to embrace the changes with unity and understanding, emphasizing the importance of progress for Delta State and Nigeria as a whole.
He also called on APC ward and local government executives to mobilize for a reception rally scheduled for Monday, April 28, 2025, in Asaba, where Oborevwori and other new members would be officially welcomed.
“In this renewed spirit of brotherhood within Delta APC, I urge all local government and ward chairmen, their executives, party members, and supporters to attend the reception rally in large numbers,” Omo-Agege said. “As we face new challenges, we must address them with wisdom and foresight.”
