Grammy-winning Nigerian artist, Damini Ogulu, better known as Burna Boy, has issued a caution to fellow musicians about getting overly excited over topping Nigerian music charts, pointing out that the financial rewards may not be as impressive as they seem.

In a recent Instagram story posted on Tuesday, Burna Boy shared that one million streams in Nigeria only generate about $300 to $400.

He highlighted that this is significantly lower than the earnings artists can make from the same number of streams in markets like the UK, US, or Europe, where they typically earn between £3,000 to £4,000, $4,000, or €3,000 to €4,000.

The “Last Last” star emphasized that being number one on Nigerian streaming charts should not be a reason to celebrate.

He encouraged artists to set higher goals or explore other business opportunities for better financial rewards.

“Your song being number 1 on any streaming platform in Nigeria is not something to celebrate. Aim higher or do other businesses on the side. I type with love,” Burna Boy wrote.

Earlier, Burna Boy also warned artists to be cautious of online polls and the influence of Nigerian social media fans.

He pointed out that online engagement doesn’t always translate into real-world success, such as sold-out concerts or international stadium performances.

“Dear artists, don’t let Twitter polls and ‘Naija social media fans’ deceive you. They won’t fill up any stadium for you anywhere in the world,” he cautioned.
