The Federal Government has confirmed that it will begin rolling out a new electronic visa (e-Visa) system starting May 1, 2025.
This announcement was made in Abuja on Wednesday during a high-level meeting focused on immigration protocol enforcement.
The session was attended by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, and the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo.
The e-Visa platform will enable applicants to request travel authorization entirely online.
By submitting required documents, such as a passport and paying applicable fees through a web portal, travellers will be able to secure their visas without physically visiting Nigerian embassies or consulates abroad.
Describing the innovation as a significant leap in efficiency, Tunji-Ojo stated that Nigeria’s immigration headquarters has already established a centralized visa approval centre.
According to him, immigration officers have received advanced training and now operate with integrated access to global criminal databases, including those of Interpol, to enhance background checks.
He emphasized that the system is designed to eliminate bureaucratic obstacles, prevent extortion, and allow genuine visitors to enter the country smoothly—without compromising national security.
A joint task force composed of officials from the Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS) and the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) will oversee the execution of the project, the ministers revealed.
