Afrobeats sensation Davido has spoken out about his past association with Ramon Abbas better known as Hushpuppi the convicted internet fraudster currently serving time in a US prison.
In a recent podcast appearance, the “Awuke” hitmaker acknowledged knowing Hushpuppi but insisted he was unaware of the criminal activities behind the influencer’s flashy lifestyle
.
“Hushpuppi is coming out soon. He lived life. For me, it’s not worth it to be behind bars, but I’m not making excuses for anyone,” Davido said. “Some people are fine with living large for five years, then dealing with the fallout.”
Davido also reflected on Nigeria’s tough economic conditions, which he believes push many toward desperate choices.
“In Nigeria, the hustle is real. Some people just think, ‘Let me enjoy life for two years and whatever happens, happens,’” he explained. “I honestly didn’t know what he was involved in. He lived good, but I still send prayers his way.”
Hushpuppi was sentenced in 2022 to over 11 years in a U.S. federal prison for laundering millions of dollars. He was also ordered to pay $1.7 million in restitution to two of his victims.
Initially arrested in Dubai in 2020 and extradited to the US, Hushpuppi pled guilty in 2021 to conspiracy to commit money laundering, with prosecutors revealing that his luxurious lifestyle was bankrolled by global fraud schemes.
