Minister of Works, David Umahi, has reopened the Independence Bridge in Lagos State, with a promise to commence permanent repairs in three weeks.
The bridge, which connects Victoria Island to other key areas of Lagos, was temporarily closed for maintenance and rehabilitation works, sparking widespread complaints from Lagos residents who were stuck in traffic for hours.
Umahi apologized for the inconvenience caused and acknowledged the importance of the bridge.
He also noted that the ministry has taken lessons from the public’s reaction, which will inform better planning for future infrastructure projects.
The temporary closure had caused massive gridlocks in the Ikoyi area on Wednesday, prompting Umahi to order the reopening of the bridge.
The permanent repairs are expected to restore and improve the bridge, addressing the concerns of Lagos residents.
