Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk has officially signed a new contract, extending his stay at Anfield until 2027.
The 33-year-old Dutch defender was initially set to become a free agent at the end of the 2024/25 season, but the club confirmed today that he has committed his future to the Reds for another two years.
Speaking to Liverpool’s official website, Van Dijk expressed his excitement: “I’m very happy, very proud. There are so many emotions going through my head right now. It’s an incredible feeling to extend my journey with this amazing club. I’m truly grateful and excited for what’s to come.”
Van Dijk’s decision comes as part of a major contract storyline that has dominated the season. Alongside Mohamed Salah and Trent Alexander-Arnold, he was among a trio of key players whose contracts were set to expire this summer.
With Salah also agreeing to stay, new manager Arne Slot’s project is beginning to take shape, though Alexander-Arnold appears to be edging closer to a move to Real Madrid.
Van Dijk and Salah reportedly turned down lucrative offers from elsewhere, signaling their commitment to Liverpool’s future. Their presence will be vital as the Reds continue their push for the Premier League title, with both expected to feature in Sunday’s clash against relegation-threatened Leicester City.
