The Kogi State Government has issued a ban on all rallies and public gatherings due to security concerns. The decision also includes a suspension of fishing activities in the Kogi West region, where recent incidents have resulted in fatalities.
On Monday, Kingsley Fanwo, the state’s Commissioner for Information, explained that the ban was necessary to maintain order and safeguard public safety. He revealed that intelligence reports pointed to plans for violent rallies disguised as political or religious movements, particularly in Kogi Central.
This ban comes just ahead of a homecoming event planned by Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, a suspended lawmaker from Kogi Central. Despite the rally ban, Akpoti-Uduaghan’s supporters have organized a major reception for her on Tuesday. Her suspension followed a dispute with Senate President Godswill Akpabio, which involved seating arrangements and allegations of sexual harassment.
Fanwo stated that while the Sallah celebrations had been peaceful, security reports suggested that upcoming rallies could ignite tensions. In response, the government has also enforced new regulations requiring security convoys entering Kogi to receive prior clearance from local authorities.
Fanwo also addressed the escalating tensions in Kogi East, particularly the ongoing communal clash between the Ika-Odele and Ika Ochala communities in Ankpa Local Government Area, as well as unrest in Kogi West due to fishing-related conflicts. These disturbances have raised serious concerns about public safety.
In light of these threats, the Kogi Government has emphasized that no rallies or public gatherings will be allowed until further notice. The state has deployed security forces to enforce the ban and ensure public peace.
Governor Usman Ododo has engaged with the Kogi State Traditional Council to seek peaceful resolutions, and local government chairmen have been instructed to oversee security in their areas.
The government has also announced that fishing activities in Kogi Local Government Area will remain suspended until peace is restored.
Security measures have been put in place to manage the situation in Ankpa and prevent further loss of life or property. The state remains committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of its citizens.
