Manchester United could be forced to keep goalkeeper Andre Onana at Old Trafford due to financial constraints and Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR), despite string of errors as goalkeepers poor form raises transfer question

Onana was notably left out of the squad in United’s 4-1 defeat to Newcastle following two costly mistakes in the Europa League clash against Lyon. However, according The Athletic, the club’s ability to sell the Cameroonian keeper hinges on turning a profit—a scenario that currently seems unlikely.

United signed Onana from Inter Milan for over £47 million in the summer of 2023. With four years left on his contract, any sale below that fee would register as a PSR loss. His high wages also make finding a buyer more difficult.

“It raises serious questions about his future,” Ornstein told NBC Sports. “Unless a club comes in with a significant offer, United may have to keep him, even if he’s no longer first choice.”

Onana has reportedly changed agents, possibly to explore new opportunities or renegotiate terms, but a sale may not be on the cards unless financial conditions improve. Some teammates are reportedly frustrated with his performances, but with few suitors, United might have to settle for benching him.

United face Lyon in the second leg of their Europa League quarter-final on Thursday, with the aggregate score tied at 2-2 following Onana’s error-strewn first-leg display.
