Governor of Enugu State, Dr. Peter Mbah has visited the family of the late Nigerian football icon and coach, Christian Chukwu on Wednesday evening to offer condolences and express solidarity during their time of grief.
The Governor was away in London attending the Commonwealth Trade and Investment Summit at the time of Chukwu’s passing, he assured the bereaved family that the government and people of Enugu share deeply in their loss. He also pledged that Chukwu would be immortalised in recognition of his immense contributions to Nigerian football and national pride.
Describing the late footballer—affectionately known as “Chairman”—as a national legend, Mbah praised Chukwu’s unwavering dedication to the sport and his impact on generations of young athletes.
“Christian Chukwu is not just a name; he is a symbol of excellence and inspiration. His legacy transcends Enugu and Nigeria—he is a global icon in the world of football,” Mbah said after signing the condolence register at the Chukwu family residence.
“This is not just a loss to the family, but a profound loss to all of us. We are here to reassure the family that they are not alone, and we will stand by them through this difficult time. We will also take concrete steps to ensure his legacy is preserved and his name immortalised.”
The governor also offered prayers for the peaceful repose of Chukwu’s soul and comfort for his family.
Joining the governor during the condolence visit were the Speaker of the Enugu State House of Assembly, Hon. Uchenna Ugwu, and the Commissioner for Youths and Sports Development, Barr. Lloyd Ekweremadu.
