Joseph Aloba, the father of the late Nigerian artist Ilerioluwa, better known as Mohbad, has recently released a new single that has sparked a range of reactions from fans and music enthusiasts.
A viral video featuring Joseph recording his latest track introduced him as “Mohbad’s dad,” prompting criticism from some fans who feel he is capitalizing on his son’s legacy.
In response, Joseph defended his actions, clarifying that he was a music artist long before his son’s passing, though his work gained more attention after Mohbad’s death.
In an earlier interview, he emphasized that he wasn’t exploiting his son’s death for personal gain but instead turning to music as a way to cope with his grief.
“I taught Mohbad how to sing. I’m a gospel artist, and he was into hip-hop. Whenever I think of him, I sing, but people don’t see it that way. I released music before his death, but it didn’t get attention. Now, people are focused on me and the kind of music I’m making,” he explained.
While both father and son share an artistic talent, their musical styles are quite different. Mohbad was known for his pop music, whereas Joseph specializes in traditional gospel, often featuring lively instruments like drums and trumpets, as well as call-and-response vocals in his performances.
Joseph appears to be embracing the stage name “Mohbad Dad,” with his music now being promoted on platforms like Instagram and YouTube under this alias. His latest single, “Plea,” has already accumulated over 1,500 views within just 48 hours of its release.
Interestingly, Mohbad had previously spoken about collaborating with his father on an unreleased track.
“My dad makes music. I’ve already got him on a song, but I don’t know when it’ll be released,” he had shared.
