Peruvian writer and Nobel literature laureate Mario Vargas Llosa has passed away at the age of 89. His family announced his death, surrounded by loved ones in Lima.

Vargas Llosa was a prominent figure in the Latin American literary “boom” of the 1960s and 1970s, known for works like “The City and the Dogs” and “Conversation in the Cathedral.” His writing often explored social reality, and his legacy has been celebrated globally.

Peruvian President Dina Boluarte praised Vargas Llosa’s “intellectual genius and enormous body of work,” which will remain an enduring legacy.

Former Colombian President Alvaro Uribe described him as a “Master of Masters,” while US Deputy State Secretary Christopher Landau highlighted his timeless and universal themes.

Vargas Llosa’s body will be cremated, as per his wishes, and a private ceremony will be held with family and close friends. No public ceremony will take place.
