The 2023 vice presidential candidate of the People’s Democratic Party PDP and former Delta State Governor, Ifeanyi Okowa, has provided clarity on why he and Governor Sheriff Oborevwori made the decision to leave the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and join the All Progressives Congress (APC).

At a formal reception held at the Cenotaph in Asaba on Monday, Okowa addressed the public, emphasizing that the shift was made with the best interests of Delta State and its people in mind.

“People have questioned why we made this move,” Okowa began. “But history teaches us that sometimes, for the greater good, a change is necessary. Our decision was driven by the need to change course for the welfare of our people.”

He further explained that the move was vital to ensure Delta State could forge a stronger relationship with the federal government, accessing the resources and support available in Abuja.

“As I mentioned when I first defected, this wasn’t about personal gain. It was about ensuring that Delta connects with the federal government,” Okowa stated. “Delta has always been a major contributor to the nation’s resources, and we needed to tap into the goodwill and support in Abuja.”

Reflecting on his time as governor, Okowa shared that although he did his best, being in opposition meant the state lost out on significant opportunities. He expressed support for Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, who, despite working hard, also needed better connections to the central government’s resources.

“We are proud of the work Governor Sheriff is doing,” Okowa continued, “but he, like any leader, needs access to the greater power and resources available in Abuja. After consultations with stakeholders, it was clear that joining the APC was the right step for our state.”

Okowa described the defection as “bold, strategic, patriotic, and well-intentioned,” urging APC members to unite for the progress of the state.

“We must put the state first. Our unity is essential. This decision is in the best interest of all, and it’s time for us to work together — those of us who have joined the APC and our brothers and sisters already in the party,” he said. “Now, more than ever, we need to support both the President and the Governor. Together, we can shape the future of Delta State and ensure the dominance of the APC here.”

Okowa’s comments came after he, Oborevwori, and other PDP members in Delta officially announced their defection to the APC last week.
