A violent clash between rival cult groups at Osun State Polytechnic in Iree has left one person dead and four others injured.

The altercation, reportedly involving members of the Eiye and Aye confraternities, took place just outside the institution’s main gate on Tuesday.

Sources within the student community, speaking anonymously, revealed that the confrontation quickly escalated. One victim was fatally struck multiple times on the head with a hammer.

The attack was captured in a video shared by Facebook user Lamina Omotoyosi, showing a man in a white shirt hitting the victim while two others stood nearby.

After the assault, the victim was rushed to a private hospital in Iree but was turned away. He later died from his injuries while being transported to a hospital in Osogbo.

An eyewitness, who chose to remain anonymous for safety reasons, described the scene, saying, “I saw the entire incident from a distance. The victim was hit multiple times on the head, and four others were injured in the attack.”

The eyewitness also mentioned a gunfight between the two cult groups during the altercation. “There were rumors of a possible clash before it happened, and security officials had even met with the known troublemakers on campus,” the witness added.

Dr. Tope Abiola, the Dean of Student Affairs at the polytechnic, confirmed that the incident occurred outside the campus and referred to the attackers as “hoodlums.” He further stated that gunshots were heard from within the campus and that one individual had sustained critical injuries.

He also clarified that the victim was an ex-student who had completed his National Diploma program two years ago. Dr. Abiola, however, was unaware of any fatalities.

Osun State Police Command’s Public Relations Officer, Abiodun Ojelabi, confirmed that the injured individuals were receiving medical treatment but could not verify the death, stating he had not been informed of any fatality.

This incident underscores the growing tension between cult groups in the region and raises alarms about the safety and security on campuses.
