Prominent Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain, Bode George, has criticized former Vice President Atiku Abubakar for his recent visit to former President Muhammadu Buhari, accusing him of sidelining his party in pursuit of a personal political agenda.
Atiku has been actively advocating for the formation of a broad coalition to challenge President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 elections. However, George sees the move as a threat to the unity and strength of the PDP, warning that the coalition effort appears to be more about Atiku’s presidential ambition than genuine political reform.
Speaking on Arise Television’s The Morning Show on Tuesday, George expressed concern over Atiku’s decision to meet with Buhari—a key figure in the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC)—without first consulting with members of his own party.
“Those forming a so-called mega party—what’s the purpose? You’re part of a solid organization, and now you’re trying to pull out without internal discussions? PDP is not a private company. You don’t just act based on personal ambition,” George said.
He questioned the rationale behind approaching Buhari, who defeated Atiku in the 2019 elections, suggesting the move was politically and strategically flawed.
“Why go to Buhari—the same person who beat you soundly in 2019? And look at those in the delegation; they’re predominantly from one region. Where are the representatives from other parts of the country? Is this about national unity or a northern agenda?” he asked.
George also raised concerns about Atiku’s repeated bids for the presidency, pointing out that he had already secured the PDP ticket in both 2019 and 2023. He warned against undermining the party’s informal zoning arrangement, which supports power rotation between the north and south.
“This pattern—north for eight years, south for eight years—brings balance. Atiku seems to be ignoring that entirely,” George said.
Instead of forming a new political platform centered around Atiku, George urged party members to stay united within the PDP and work collaboratively towards 2027.
“Rather than splintering the opposition for one man’s ambition, let’s come together and rebuild the PDP,” he concluded.
