A group identified as Concerned Citizens Against Corruption staged a protest on Tuesday at the office of the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), demanding the investigation and prosecution of former Group CEO of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), Mele Kyari.

The protesters, led by convener Kabir Matazu, expressed concern that despite Kyari’s removal along with the entire NNPCL board by President Bola Tinubu on April 2, no probe has been initiated into alleged financial irregularities during his tenure.

Key among their allegations is the lack of transparency in multi-billion-dollar refinery rehabilitation projects and a controversial $2 billion debt reportedly owed to Matrix Energy, said to be repaid through daily crude oil allocations.

The group questioned the secrecy surrounding the deal and called for clarity on overlapping financial commitments, particularly concerning the Port Harcourt Refinery.

Matazu emphasized that while Kyari’s dismissal was welcomed by many, the absence of follow-up investigations has left Nigerians disappointed. He highlighted inconsistencies in the reported investments in refinery projects, including a separate $400 million contribution from Matrix Energy.

The coalition demanded that the AGF conduct a full review of agreements made under Kyari’s leadership and initiate a judicial inquiry into the management of public funds by NNPCL during his time in office.

They insisted that accountability and transparency are crucial, especially as Nigeria grapples with economic hardship. The group pledged to sustain pressure on authorities until thorough investigations are carried out and justice is served.
