Millions of WhatsApp users worldwide, including those in Nigeria, will soon lose access to the app as Meta phases out support for outdated devices.
Starting May 5, 2025, WhatsApp will no longer function on smartphones that do not meet the latest security and performance standards. This change will impact both individual users and small businesses using WhatsApp Business.
Meta explained that this decision is part of its commitment to maintaining app security, stability, and compatibility with evolving operating systems. The company stated, “As technology advances, phasing out support for older hardware is necessary to ensure optimal app functionality and security.”
Affected iPhones will include models running iOS versions older than 15.1, such as:
iPhone 5s
iPhone 6
iPhone 6 Plus
These devices are unable to upgrade beyond iOS 12.5.7 and will therefore no longer be compatible with WhatsApp.
Similarly, WhatsApp will stop supporting Android devices running version 4.4 (KitKat) or earlier, starting January 1, 2025. Affected Android models include:
Samsung: Galaxy S3, Note 2, Ace 3, S4 Mini
Motorola: Moto G (1st Gen), Moto E (2014), Razr HD
HTC: One X+, Desire 500, Desire 601
LG: Optimus G, L90
Nexus: Nexus 4
Sony: Xperia Z, SP, T, V
To continue using WhatsApp, users will need to upgrade to a device running at least iOS 15.1 or Android 5.0 (Lollipop). Meta also advises users to back up their chat histories before upgrading to prevent data loss.
This move by Meta aligns with the growing trend of tech companies prioritizing more secure, stable, and high-performance devices while discontinuing support for outdated hardware.
