President Bola Tinubu has expressed confidence that more members of opposition parties will defect to the All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Speaking on Thursday at the APC National Summit where both the Progressive Governors’ Forum (PGF) and the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) officially endorsed him as the sole presidential candidate for 2027, Tinubu noted that Nigeria’s Constitution guarantees the freedom of association and political alignment.
“You don’t blame people for abandoning a sinking ship,” the President said. “I expect more to join us; that’s the nature of democracy. We welcome all to the progressive fold.”
Reacting to his endorsement, Tinubu expressed gratitude and reaffirmed his commitment to national development.
“The endorsement today, the ‘carry go’ expression, I know the road,” he said. “We will lead you to the promised land. The revival of Nigeria’s economy is underway. Hope is alive and standing before you, take it.”
He also highlighted his vision for the future, declaring that the next two years would bring significant progress.
“Nigeria will be industrialised. We have a mission, and we have a vision. To many of you who haven’t received political appointments yet, be patient many opportunities are coming,” Tinubu assured.
The President further praised Vice President Kashim Shettima, describing him as a vital member of his strategic team.
In formally endorsing Tinubu for a second term, APC National Chairman, Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje, stated:
“As the National Chairman of the party, the only recognised platform for fielding candidates, I hereby affirm the endorsement of President Tinubu as our sole candidate for 2027.”
