Chief Chekwas Okorie, the founding National Chairman of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), has strongly criticized Anambra State Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, for pledging support to President Bola Tinubu as APGA’s presidential candidate in the 2027 election.
Governor Soludo made the endorsement during President Tinubu’s visit to Anambra on Thursday. However, Okorie condemned the move, describing it as overreaching and a reflection of a broader pattern of self-serving behavior by APGA governors.
In a statement, Okorie said: “While the people of Anambra and the broader Igbo community warmly welcomed President Tinubu’s visit, Soludo went too far by claiming that APGA would adopt Tinubu for the 2027 presidential race. He even suggested that such endorsements have been party policy since 2011, referencing the support Peter Obi gave to President Goodluck Jonathan.”
Okorie dismissed that claim, asserting that no such formal party policy exists. He expressed regret over what he described as repeated misrepresentation of APGA by its own governors, accusing them of using the party as a stepping stone to achieve personal ambitions, then turning their backs on it.
He also recalled a similar incident involving former Imo State Governor Rochas Okorocha, who claimed APGA was part of the 2013 APC merger, a decision Okorie said was made solely by Okorocha and his loyalists.
“Governor Soludo does not have the authority to make such a significant commitment on behalf of APGA,” Okorie concluded.
