Ooni and Alaafin

The Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Abimbola Akeem Owoade, has responded to public reactions over a viral video showing him seated while greeting the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, at a recent event in Ibadan hosted by Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu.

The video, which sparked social media debate, captured the moment the Ooni arrived and other monarchs stood to greet him, while the Alaafin remained seated — prompting speculation about royal protocol and respect.

In a statement issued by his Personal Assistant, Kolade Oladele, Alaafin Owoade dismissed the uproar as an attempt by online commentators to stir conflict among Yoruba traditional rulers. He described the controversy as a distraction from critical issues such as insecurity, economic hardship, and youth empowerment in Yorubaland.

“The Alaafin holds the Ooni of Ife and all custodians of Yoruba heritage in the highest regard,” the statement read. “He remains deeply committed to unity, dignity, and collaborative progress among traditional institutions.”

The monarch emphasized that royal interactions should not be reduced to “performative gestures” or “digital spectacles,” and called on the public to reject divisive narratives. He urged Yoruba sons and daughters to focus on preserving culture, strengthening institutions, and fostering regional development.

“We must rise above pettiness and work together for the betterment of our people,” the statement concluded.
