Enzo Fernandez has raised eyebrows among Chelsea fans after making a pointed “always Real Madrid” remark, fueling speculation about a potential summer move.
The Argentine midfielder, who became the most expensive signing in British football history with his £107 million ($144m) transfer to Chelsea in January 2023, is now at the center of transfer talk just 18 months into his eight-and-a-half-year contract.
Despite a slow start to life in the Premier League, Fernandez has grown into a pivotal figure at Stamford Bridge, even wearing the captain’s armband on occasion. However, his recent comments have reignited rumors of interest from Spanish giants Real Madrid.
Speaking in an interview with journalist Gaston Edul, Fernandez was asked which team he plays with on EA Sports FC. His response “Real Madrid, always Real Madrid” has done little to dispel speculation linking him with a move to the Bernabeu.
At 24, Fernandez is considered one of the most promising midfield talents in world football, and Real Madrid, known for their aggressive pursuit of top talent, are reportedly monitoring his situation closely.
Chelsea, meanwhile, remain keen to hold on to their star man and are expected to resist any attempts to lure him away. Fernandez is set to feature in two more fixtures this season, a key Premier League showdown against top-five rivals Nottingham Forest and the Europa Conference League final against Real Betis.
