Veteran actors Nkem Owoh and Sani Ma’azu were celebrated on Saturday with the coveted Industry Merit Award at the 11th Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA), in recognition of their decades-long contributions to the Nigerian film industry.
Nkem Owoh who is popularly known as “Osuofia” was honoured for his dynamic and influential career spanning acting, comedy, music, and scriptwriting. At 70, the Nollywood legend continues to captivate audiences with his signature wit, impeccable comedic timing, and enduring screen presence that has shaped generations of filmmakers and fans.
Sani Ma’azu, a respected figure in Hausa-language cinema, was likewise recognised for his unwavering dedication to culturally-rooted storytelling. Over the years, he has become a central voice in Northern Nigerian film, promoting indigenous narratives and enriching the broader Nollywood landscape.
The AMVCA Industry Merit Award is reserved for individuals whose work has left a lasting imprint on African cinema. This year’s honourees exemplify the talent, resilience, and cultural depth that continue to drive the continent’s creative industry forward.
Hosted in Lagos, Nigeria, the award ceremony was broadcast live across all Africa Magic platforms. Organised annually by MultiChoice, the AMVCA celebrates outstanding achievements in television, film, and digital media across Africa.
Winners were determined through a combination of public voting and decisions by a panel of expert jurors, with eligible projects drawn from those released between January 1 and December 31, 2024.
