Former Governor of Osun State, Rauf Aregbesola, has dismissed the possibility of his political group forming an alliance ahead of the 2026 governorship election in the state.

Speaking in Osogbo on Sunday at a reception organised by the Omoluabi Progressives a political movement he founded, Aregbesola reaffirmed his group’s commitment to contesting the election independently. The event marked his 68th birthday and drew a large gathering of supporters.

“By this time next year, we will be near the Governor’s Office in Abere. May God make it so,” Aregbesola declared. “There is a false impression that we plan to align with another group. That is not true. We are not forming any alliance. We will pursue our political goals independently, and by God’s grace, we will contest and win.”

Reflecting on the significance of birthdays, Aregbesola urged celebrants to always remember their mothers, highlighting the immense sacrifices made during childbirth.

“Whether alive or late, mothers deserve to be honoured in our prayers during birthday celebrations,” he said. “Their pain during childbirth is immeasurable.”

Also speaking at the event, Moshood Adeoti, former Secretary to the State Government under Aregbesola’s administration, encouraged members of the Omoluabi Progressives to remain loyal and committed to the group’s ideals.

Representing Governor Ademola Adeleke, Commissioner for Political Affairs and Intergovernmental Relations, Biyi Odunlade, commended Aregbesola for his impactful leadership and contributions to the state.

“I celebrate you because you left behind a solid foundation for good governance in Osun. Your legacy is commendable and stands the test of time,” Odunlade said.

The event was well-attended by members of the Omoluabi Progressives, political associates from Lagos, and former appointees from Osun State.
