A group identified as the Concerned Youth of Ayegun Gbonmi has submitted a formal petition to the Governor of Osun State, raising alarm over what they describe as an attempt to impose an unrightful monarch on their community by the Ataoja of Osogbo land.

According to the petition signed by the Coordinator of the group, Femi Johnson and Secretary, Faruk Issa, the group called for immediate intervention to preserve peace and respect for traditional customs in Ayegun Gbonmi, in Osogbo.

The Youth accused the Ataoja of Osogbo land, Oba Jimoh Olanipekun of attempting to appoint a monarch without observing the community’s age-long traditions and established procedures. They warn that such an action could “disrupt the delicate balance of traditional institutions” and sow discord among the people.

“The imposition of an unrightful monarch would infringe on our rights as a community to choose our own leaders and determine our own destiny,” the petition states.

It further notes that any disregard for customary law could result in conflict, thereby threatening the peace and prosperity the community has enjoyed.

The youth group called on Governor Ademola Adeleke to uphold the rights of Ayegun Gbonmi to choose its own traditional leader in line with custom, and ensure respect for the community’s traditional processes while also preventing any external imposition that could destabilize the area.

Also speaking with InsightMedia, Comrade Olabalogun Oluwaseyi added that “the group has issued a month ultimatum to the State Government to intervene on the matter, if no intervention by the end of the ultimatum a peaceful demonstration will be held”.

When contacted, the Secretary to the Ataoja, Mr Wasiu Olawale Bello said the matter has been taken to Court and the Palace is not ready to speak on it.
